ONE GAME TO GO -

GROSSMONT VS. SAN FRANCISCO IN CALIFORNIA CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

This one will go a long way in deciding the ultimate J.C. Grid-Wire 2003 National Champion.  BUTLER COUNT concluded a remarkable campaign with a 12-0 spotless record.  Both GROSSMONT (13-0) and  SAN FRANCISCO (11-0) are unbeaten making this perhaps the      nation’s only post-season game pitting two undefeated elevens.

QUESTION?  Can Grossmont survive the rigors of 13 games to face the terrific Rams defense, which has allowed just an average of 142 yards per game?  They have already lost All-American Lber Dan Catalano plus several key reserves during the 3-game playoffs.

QUESTION?  How much will CCSF miss All-American OT, 6-7, 340-pound Albert Toeaina, who was suspended from this game for getting the boot against Reedley?

QUESTION? How will the two freshmen QBs react to the championship pressure?  The Griffins' Jarrod Jackson went 133 of 237 and 1,978 yards while connecting on 18 TD passes and giving up just 4 picks in 9 games.  He was terrific vs. Canyons and has great running capabilities if he can’t get the ball in the air.  He has a sensational athlete in WR/PK Todd Watkins to throw to, and if he is covered there are ample options.

Head Coach Dave Jordan throws three RBs at the opposition. The Griff DBs are as good as any in JC football, headed by Maurice London at free safety, and Watkins has scored 234 points in two years.

George Rush has been 12-0 in four of the past five years with his CCSF eleven and each year has a slick QB.

Jason Swanson was the starter at the beginning of the year but by mid-season freshman Jason Ayoob, a 6-2, 200-pounder, had taken command.  He quickly accounted for 21 TDs.  An example of his prowess was displayed vs. Reedley.  Ayoob hit on 21 of 30 passes for 306 yds and a TD and rushed for yet another. All-American RB Tim Brown is a blur, dashing for 1,354 yards on just 169 carries (8-yd per carry average).  He also tallied 19 times.  Antwon Guidry is a not-so-secret weapon who might show up at RB, or cornerback, and definitely as a return guy.  FS Bret Jones, WR Deqawn Mobley and TE Jamir Davis are just a few top members of the supporting cast.

This one shapes up as a doozy.  Last year we thought Canyons could outscore Reedley and failed to go with the team with the best defense.  Result, a resounding 35-15 win for Reedley.  Our hunch is that Grossmont is the Cinderella team this year and their defense against Canyons showed plenty.  Watkins will kick a pair of field goals, the last one late in the game to provide a GROSSMONT 27, SAN FRANCISCO 24 verdict.

NEXT WEEK WE WILL ISSUE OUR FINAL J.C. GRID-WIRE TOP-THIRTY TEAMS FOR 2003

SOME COACHING CHANGES ALREADY IN PLACE –

MT. SAN JACINTO is advertising for a replacement for Greg Shaw.  Ken Blumenthal’s tenure at SAN BERNARDINO VALLEY ended after one season.  Steve DaPrato is being replaced at CHABOT.  There are rumors swirling around three Kansas Jucos: INDEPENDENCE, DODGE CITY and FORT SCOTT.

BOWL NOTES -

We felt lucky in coming out of the post-season with 17 correct picks and 11 losses.  That puts our overall total, starting in 1986, to 236 wins, 124 losses and 6 ties.  That’s a still healthy 67.7 percent.  I’ll take that to Vegas with me anytime.

N.E. OKLAHOMA avenged an earlier 12-0 loss to Coffeyville, traveling to Kansas to edge the Ravens 30-27 on Jason Dixon’s 43-yd field goal late in the game.  Fred Shaw had a key pick in the end zone with 40 seconds to play.  Lee Baker gained 110 on 26 carries for CCC and Dustin Bromley caught 6 for 100 and 2 scores.

Tony Eckert had 3 TD passes for TYLER in rout of Rochester.  RCC tallied their field goals for the first scores of the game.

SNOW DT Justin Schroader had a pair of sacks and numerous tackles to pave way for 27-21 OT win over Georgia Military.

GLENDALE forced 5 fumbles and turned 3 of them into scores and Glendale RB Ramel McIntosh earned MVP honors.

As usual BUTLER COUNTY trailed at halftime, and as usual the Grizzlies came back to win.  Joseph Harris pounded out 120 yards in 30 lugs for the victors, who had 3 sacks for minus 29 yards.

Butte QB Bret Ratliff was 15 of 27 for 281 and ran for 3 TDs while Shaun Bodiford caught 10 for 202 and one TD.

Tim Brown went 32 times for 130 and 2 TDs and caught 2 for 45 and another for CCSF.  Safety Bret Jones had 1 INT, 1 fumble recovery, and a host of tackles.

FULLERTON’s Tom Kirchmeyer went 16 for 27 and 391 yards and Adam Ernst was 18 of 44 for 243 for MT. SAN ANTONIO.

Delanie Walker of Mt. SAC hauled in 14 passes for 268 yards and 3 TDs in what was probably the top individual effort of any one player, especially on a losing side. Hornets' WR Chaz Guinn countered with 8 grabs  for 246-2.

GROSSMONT racked up 568 yards in the finals as Jackson tossed for 278 yards and 4 scores.

QB Jordan Borowicz was 24 of 38 for 332 and 4 TDs for SANTA ROSA and Brendon Parnell recorded 8 catches for 131 yards and ran 12 times for 136 and a TD.  Safety Scott Ware was MVP-D and Luke Sheldon, who had a perfect shotgun snaps in a down pour, was MVP offense.
